Reading Asian and European Odds with Numbers

Odds can be confusing, especially when you see two different formats. European odds (decimal) are simple: they show your total return per unit staked. For example, odds of 2.00 mean you double your money. If you bet ₱100, you get ₱200 back (₱100 profit + ₱100 stake). Asian odds (Malay, Indo, HK) work differently. Malay odds can be positive or negative. Positive Malay odds show profit per unit staked. For example, 0.50 means you win ₱50 for every ₱100 staked. Negative Malay odds show how much you need to stake to win ₱100. For example, -0.80 means you stake ₱80 to win ₱100.

Converting and Comparing

Let us work through an example. You see a football match with European odds of 1.80 for Team A to win. In Malay odds, that is 0.80 (since 1.80 - 1 = 0.80). So if you bet ₱100, you win ₱80 profit, total return ₱180. Now, if you see Malay odds of -0.90, that converts to European odds of 2.11 (since 1 / 0.90 + 1 = 2.11). So a ₱100 bet returns ₱211. The key is to compare the implied probability. European odds of 2.00 imply a 50% chance. Malay odds of 1.00 also imply 50%. Always shop around for the best odds.
